The 3 Cs
Learning Standard at Glenrothes High School
At Glenrothes High School, we are committed to delivering high-quality learning and teaching experiences for every pupil. To ensure consistency and excellence across all classrooms, we have developed a Learning Standard that all our teachers follow. This standard is built around five key pillars:
-
Intended Learning: Every lesson begins with a clear focus. Pupils are made aware of what they are learning, why it matters, and how they will know they’ve been successful. This clarity helps learners take ownership of their progress.
-
Differentiation: We recognise that every learner is unique. Our teachers plan and deliver lessons that are inclusive and responsive to individual needs, ensuring that all pupils are appropriately supported and challenged.
-
Assessment: Ongoing assessment is embedded in our practice. Teachers use a range of strategies to check understanding, provide feedback, and adapt teaching to meet learners’ needs. This helps pupils reflect on their learning and identify next steps.
-
Support and Challenge: We believe in high expectations for all. Our classrooms are nurturing environments where pupils are supported to overcome barriers and challenged to reach their full potential.
-
Relationships: Positive relationships are at the heart of our school. We foster a culture of mutual respect, trust, and encouragement, creating a safe and supportive space where pupils can thrive.
What Makes an Excellent Learner?
At Glenrothes High School, we believe that learning is a shared journey. Our definition of an excellent learner has been developed by pupils, for pupils, using our shared language of learning. This framework sets out clear expectations for how pupils engage with their learning and take responsibility for their progress.
An excellent learner at Glenrothes High School:
-
Listens to learning intentions
-
Engaged and active in lessons
- Resilient in the face of challenges
- Reflective and open to feedback
This shared understanding helps to create a consistent learning culture across the school and empowers pupils to strive for excellence in everything they do.

The Three C Model
At Glenrothes High School, we believe that success in learning—and in life—depends on more than just academic knowledge. Our Three C Model outlines the essential meta-skills we aim to develop in every pupil:
- Collaboration – the ability to work effectively with others, valuing different perspectives, contributing to group goals, and building positive relationships
- Communication – expressing ideas clearly and confidently, listening actively, and adapting communication styles for different audiences and purposes
- Critical Thinking – analysing information, questioning assumptions, solving problems creatively, and making informed decisions
These three core skills are embedded across all areas of the curriculum and are closely linked to our focus on literacy, numeracy, and wellbeing. We actively track and support the development of these skills throughout each pupil’s learning journey.
By nurturing Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking, we are preparing our young people to thrive in a rapidly changing world—equipped not only with knowledge, but with the skills to apply it meaningfully and responsibly.
